Trending is a breaking news feature on Current News. When a story is trending on the website, it will appear in a separate column to the right of the main news feed. If the story is of high importance, it may break the normal flow of programming. This is done by a “Newsflash” or a special report, with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue. Historically, programming interruptions were reserved for the most urgent stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which required stations to interrupt their regular schedules to cover the event nationally. This practice is now common at 24-hour news networks, where an anchor is ready to go live at any time.
