In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is an urgently important event that warrants a cut-in during regular programing. This is especially common at 24-hour news channels, which have a live anchor available for breaking news reporting at all times. When a breaking news story occurs, station imaging will display a message to alert viewers and tell them to “stand by” for a special report. Once the report begins, the network feed will typically go to a countdown sequence to allow any affiliate stations to switch over to the breaking news segment. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news reports were usually limited to highly serious events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted national coverage requiring multiple stations to interrupt programming.
