When a breaking news story occurs, the national network that is airing it will often interrupt its non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts), with a countdown sequence and distinctive music cue that says “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” The newscast will pause briefly to allow its affiliates to switch over to the network feed, and the reporter who is covering the story will then begin to cover it live. Occasionally, networks will even integrate breaking news tickers on the lower thirds of their regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
