Breaking news is a special report on a news event of high importance that interrupts current non-news programming (or, in the case of network-based newscasts, regularly scheduled news programs) and often requires a countdown sequence for affiliate stations to switch to a network feed. A distinctive opening graphic accompanied by a specific music cue is used; if the event is of such high urgency as to require nationwide coverage, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
