Breaking news is live coverage of a current event that necessitates the interruption of either regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a pause in the normal program) for a special report. When this occurs, a distinctive opening graphic with a unique music cue is displayed to inform the viewer of the change. Historically, these breaks were reserved for events of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, for which national networks interrupted all regularly scheduled programs nationwide and used a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker to alert viewers of the change.
