One of the major trends in media today is streaming news. It has taken hold for a variety of reasons. But the fact that so many people are now watching online video means the future of news is changing.
Streaming is also redefining political coverage. New, overtly political news operations are likely to emerge in the coming years. This could lead to more polarization in the political arena.
Historically, broadcast and cable news have been profitable businesses. However, in the past decade, the market has shifted dramatically. Now, many news networks have launched free streaming services. They are trying to win over viewers by promising free, cable-quality news.
Unlike broadcast and cable, streaming allows viewers to watch news at their convenience. For example, they can choose to watch it while at work, at home, or on the go.
The most popular streaming networks offer a range of programming. These include documentaries, news analysis, and reruns. Typically, these streams repurpose programming from broadcast and cable.
Major news networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming efforts. Their hopes are high. Streaming will allow them to archive content, and deliver it on demand. That means they can offer timely news delivery.
In 2022, CBS News plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news. This will allow the network to stay relevant in a time when viewers spend more time watching streaming programs than broadcast TV.
A major reason for the news networks’ enthusiasm is that they feel the influx of viewers into the streaming audience. Traditionally, linear television had a strong advantage in serving this niche audience.
