In television news coverage, breaking news is an event that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). Such an occurrence may require the national networks to issue a “newsflash” alert, or ask their affiliates to interrupt their own newscasts for the special report. Alternatively, 24-hour news channels typically have their anchors available for live interruptible reporting on demand. When such a break occurs, it is customary for the network to pause its newscast or begin a countdown sequence and then launch a breaking news graphic with a distinctive music cue. This graphic is usually accompanied by a news ticker and a special announcement.
