When it comes to television news, cable TV has been at the forefront for decades. But as the number of consumers streaming online has grown, major news networks are betting that their streams will take over. Streaming news will allow viewers to receive news at any time. In addition, it is more economical to build a news library using streaming technology.
CNN and Fox started out as cable news stations. Later, they spawned MSNBC. Both of these networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations.
The networks now offer regular nightly news programs and documentaries. They also provide news analysis. However, some critics argue that streaming has failed to attract a large viewership.
In a recent study, researchers found that more than half of the American population watches television, while almost 80 percent subscribes to at least one streaming service. If the majority of consumers choose not to pay for their TV news, it could lead to a siloing effect, as with cable.
