Breaking news is often used to describe the most significant story of the moment. In some instances, this may be the only story that is covered in the news. In other instances, it may be used to describe a story that is not yet reported, or a story that was previously reported but is deemed of interest to the general public.
A breaking news story can take a few minutes to report, but in some cases, it can last for days. If the news is of interest to the general public, it may be covered in a special report format, which is a longer form of breaking news.
One of the first times we saw the term “breaking news” used in the context of an actual story was during the John F. Kennedy assassination. CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite provided coverage of the event.
The news is usually relayed via the network’s internal alert service. When a breaking story is reported, the news anchor introduces the story with a bit of information about the story. He or she reminds viewers that more details will be coming on local news. The network may also use an opening graphic to draw the viewer’s attention to the story.
