Breaking news is a term used to describe a developing news story that warrants an interruption of ongoing non-news programming (such as a television or radio newscast). Breaking news often interrupts regular commercial advertising, and may be presented by an on-air anchor or network feed. Depending on the severity of the event, breaking news can interrupt regular programming for hours or even days. During this time, lower thirds and other graphics can be altered to convey a sense of urgency. The concept of breaking news was popularized by 24-hour news networks, which often feature an on-air anchor ready for a live interruption of scheduled programs to cover an event as it happens. Prior to the creation of these 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions for breaking stories were typically reserved for events that required immediate nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. For longer-term breaking news events, many network affiliates will utilize a “Special Report” ticker in lieu of an alert crawl.
