The time between two news reports on the same subject can range from a few minutes to several hours. The longest uninterrupted news event could be days, as in the case of the John F. Kennedy assassination, which occurred between November 22 and 26, 1963. Another example of a prolonged news event was the September 11 attacks, which took place between September 11 and 15. During sustained coverage, networks may integrate analysts and commentators from studios, phones, satellites, and the internet. In some cases, regular commercial advertisements may be suspended.
There are many uses of the term “breaking news” and “breaking” news. “Breaking news” is a term used to describe the latest news at the time. For example, a television program may call a story “breaking news” when it’s actually about an event that occurred in the past. “Breaking news” and “special report” may also be used interchangeably, but they refer to different things. In the U.S., breaking news often refers to a story that’s unfolding in the middle of the night.
