During a newscast, the anchor may mention “breaking news”. Usually, this is used to describe a story that is not yet on the air.
A breaking news is usually a story of high importance. However, the term is also used to describe a story that may be old or has nothing to do with the current news. For instance, a newscaster may mention “breaking news” in connection with the death of a woman in an automobile accident.
During a breaking news story, the anchor may say “this is a breaking news story.” This is usually followed by a brief description of the story. The anchor will also remind viewers that they can get more details on the local news.
During the early days of breaking news, it was common for a station to cut away to a video of the story. A reverse countdown, usually from five seconds, is also common.
In the modern era, news reporting has expanded. 24-hour news networks typically include a live anchor, while local stations may have a local reporter cover breaking news. Local stations also receive cues from network talent to start and stop their newscasts.
A breaking news is also commonly called a special report. In a special report, the news is delivered in a specialized format. It may involve a graphic, music, or an internal alert service. The story may last for several minutes, or it may be a multi-hour report.
One of the earliest breaking news stories was the John F. Kennedy assassination. This event was covered by CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite.
