If a news event is breaking, or “trending”, it may warrant the interruption of current non-news programming or even of a live newscast. The network will usually alert its affiliates that an interrupt is imminent, and a countdown will appear on screen to allow them to switch over to the feed. Often, the network will insert a special graphic overlaid on the lower thirds of the regular program information (and other graphics) and use a distinctive music cue for the report. Until 24-hour news channels became prevalent, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent news events that demanded national coverage.
