Trending is an area of news that reflects popular interest. This can include topics like pop culture, celebrity, and current events. Trending is commonly seen on television, especially on 24-hour news networks. When a breaking story occurs, the network will usually interrupt non-news programming with a brief graphical open. This may be followed by a countdown sequence, which allows affiliated stations to switch over to the network feed. This graphic is sometimes known as a Newsflash, Special Report or Breaking news. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was only used for extremely urgent news, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
