Breaking news is a segment of a national television or radio network broadcast that reports on urgent, developing stories which necessitate an immediate interruption of regular programming. A breaking news segment may last only a few minutes or be sustained for hours or even days, depending on the event being reported. When a story breaks which is considered of sufficient importance, stations usually alert affiliates to interrupt their own non-news programs by using a countdown sequence. Then, they will switch to the network feed, often with an opening graphic and distinct music cue. In the past, this was generally reserved for news of an extraordinary nature, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage and forced many stations to cease programming for extended news breaks.
A teacher at an Arizona high school is accused of having inappropriate relationships with students. Plus, the brother of TikTok star Haley Beck is charged with violating a probation order.
