What’s Trending
During breaking news events, broadcasters interrupt non-news programming or a regular scheduled newscast to cover an urgent story. The interruption often starts with a countdown sequence and a graphic, asking viewers to stand by, or to switch over to the network feed. It is sometimes called a Newsflash or Special Report. Breaking news is typically accompanied by a live audio feed from the scene, and sometimes by an interview with the subject of the story. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, these kinds of breaks were rare and usually reserved for major national or world events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, that elicited nationwide coverage and required many stations to suspend their programs for a time. Occasionally, a local newscast might interrupt for such an event, or a regular news program might run a cut-in or alert crawl during a severe weather event.
