A major advance in the transmission of news occurred during the fifteenth century, when printing presses spread throughout Europe and Asia. In the early 1600s, the first newspapers emerged in Germany. Although they did not have a formal newsroom, they were still used by people who needed to know the latest information. One such publication, the Relation aller Furnemmen und gedenckwurdigen Historien, is regarded as the first formalized ‘newspaper’. Ancient Rome’s acta diurna, published in 131 BC, had similar functions.
A new initiative to tackle the critical shortage of forensic scientists in the United States is underway in Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. This collaboration with the Illinois State Police and Southwestern Illinois College will promote criminal justice research and reform.
