A breaking news story is a current event of high interest or public importance that warrants immediate coverage by television or radio broadcasters. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such events would typically interrupt non-news programming and require local television and radio affiliates to break in with short-form newscasts or alert crawls during regularly scheduled programs. Occasionally, these news items may also elicit the use of lower thirds and other graphics that convey a sense of urgency. This type of breaking news is often referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report. When a breaking news event takes place during a nationally networked newscast, the network usually interrupts with a countdown sequence, giving affiliate stations time to switch over to the network feed.
