A breaking news story is an urgent news event requiring an interruption of non-news programs, or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts. If a national network newscast is in progress at the time of an emergency, a countdown sequence will usually be shown onscreen to allow affiliates to switch to the network feed without losing their place in the program, and a special “breaking news” graphic will appear on screen. This practice was more common in the days before 24-hour news networks, and is still used by some stations and television channels for extremely important events that must be reported immediately, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which was the first such event to elicit nationwide coverage, necessitating numerous stations to interrupt programming.
