When an event happens that elicits immediate, nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt their non-news programming (or in some cases, regular newscasts), it is known as breaking news. This may be signalled by a network telling its affiliated stations to “stand by” for an imminent interruption, or by a countdown sequence on the newscast. The breaking news report may then begin with a graphic overlaid with a distinctive music cue. Breaking news used to be restricted to severe weather events, which would prompt a special ticker or cut-in during regularly scheduled programming. However, 24-hour news channels are now common and often interrupt programs to cover breaking news.
