Breaking news is a term used in the United States to refer to events that are in current development or in immediate need of coverage. It is usually reported on by a national network newscast, which will pause or stop the normal broadcast to interrupt non-news programming, and issue a countdown sequence to allow network affiliate stations to switch over to the newscast’s feed. A breaking news graphic or alert crawl is displayed on-screen, and lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey the sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were usually reserved for major events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
