In a news article, the headline is the biggest story in the newspaper, grabbing the attention of the reader with its bold print. However, there are two types of current news: trending news and breaking news. Trending news is focused on the reader’s interest, and it is often more a form of buzz than an actual story. For example, a story may be trending if it received a high number of hits on the web, but if the story has little impact on society, it may not trend as well.

To counter this problem, local television stations may use a special report format. This format often includes an internal alert service, allowing other networks to join the feed. Once the news is broadcast, the network’s feed will switch to a reverse countdown, which typically starts at five seconds. Local television stations typically do not use reverse countdowns. In these cases, the breaking news anchor will introduce the story and the breaking news graphic will display music to emphasize the significance of the news.

Breaking news is the most popular type of current news. This genre is characterized by programming interruptions that are usually confined to breaking news. One notable example is the John F. Kennedy assassination. Walter Cronkite’s coverage of the assassination was particularly noteworthy. Other examples of breaking news include “news flash” and “special report” on 24-hour news channels.
