Before 24-hour news networks became common, breaking news events would elicit nationwide coverage, requiring numerous stations to interrupt regularly scheduled programming through “newsflash” or “special report” breaks. Usually, a network will alert affiliates that their feed is being interrupted and request them to stand by. The break will be introduced by a distinctive newsflash-style graphic and an alert music cue. The resulting broadcast can last only a few minutes, or could continue for hours or even days.
