Breaking news is live, urgent coverage of an event that reaches a point of breaking public interest. When a story is considered to be of such high importance that it warrants interruption of normal television programming, the network’s feed usually begins with a countdown sequence, followed by a newsflash graphic and a distinctive music cue. A special report then appears, and is typically introduced by an anchor. If the news event is significant enough, a lower third and alert crawl may also appear during regular programming. Breaking news coverage is a common feature of 24-hour cable and satellite news channels.
