When a breaking news story warrants immediate and nationwide coverage, broadcasters interrupt regular non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to break the story. The breaking news segment is often introduced with a countdown sequence or a graphic, and station identification may be overlaid during the news report, as opposed to through traditional station imaging promos or program reminders. In the early days of 24-hour news networks, breaking news segments were generally limited to major events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy or major weather disasters, which elicit widespread coverage and often require multiple stations to interrupt their programming.
