During Breaking News, national networks interrupt non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour news channels, their regular live anchored broadcasts, to cover an event that warrants urgent coverage. This event may be a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or some other emergency. The network will notify its affiliates and viewers to stand by while it prepares a special report. A countdown will often be used to indicate the time of the interruption, and a distinctive music cue is played on the air to signal the beginning of a breaking news story. Various other graphics and elements, such as lower thirds, may also be modified to convey an added sense of urgency. [1]
