Trending is a segment on television news programs that shows stories deemed to be the most popular by viewers. The segments are often presented by the network’s lead news anchor and may contain analysis of current events. They may also feature stories that have been gaining popularity on social media. The term “trending” was originally used by cable networks as part of their newsmagazine programs, and is now commonly used by broadcast and online news outlets.
Breaking news is an interruption of regular programming to report on a developing story, especially one that requires immediate attention and coverage. This was a common practice at non-network broadcast stations prior to the creation of 24-hour news networks, as well as on local and regional TV and radio channels in the United States until recent years, when breaking news reports began to be included on special tickers during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
The news event that prompts an interrupt can last a few minutes, or, depending on its severity and the extent of coverage, may continue for hours or even days. The interrupt will typically include a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed, and will be followed by an opening graphic and a distinct music cue.
