About Trending

When a news event occurs that is so important that it warrants interruption of regular programming, broadcasters may interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming, or halt current newscasts to begin breaking news coverage. This is often referred to as a newsflash, special report or breaking news. A countdown graphic or music cue may be used to alert affiliated stations that they will be going to break in and inform them to stand by for the news. Often, lower thirds and other graphics are also altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of programming interruption was usually reserved for very serious events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or major severe weather events.
