Current News is a broadcast television series where a news anchor reports on a topic of immediate interest. Typically, the story will be aired in a live feed or on delayed video.
Breaking news (also referred to as a special report or breaking news flash) is a term used by broadcasters and cable TV channels to describe a current issue or event that warrants interruption of scheduled programming in order to provide its details. This may be because of a natural disaster, terrorism, or the assassination of an important person.
Normally, the coverage lasts a few minutes, or if it is an event with extended duration, the report could go on for hours and even days. Depending on the situation, the news may be passed on to a reporter at the scene for further analysis.
The news report will usually be followed by a graphic and disclaimer that tells viewers that there will be more details on the network’s late local newscast or the network’s overnight news program later in the day if applicable, as well as on the network’s news division website (or the station’s local news site, if coverage is provided locally). If the story is about an international issue, then it may be passed to another country for further coverage.
When the coverage is over, the station or network will either resume their normal daytime or late night programming – depending on how much time was spent – or start new programming to continue the coverage. If the event is significant enough, programming may be joined in progress – but not all segments will be airing, as stations are careful to avoid breaking up regular, highly rated programs if possible.
