You have probably heard of “breaking news” in reference to news reports. What is it, exactly? Breaking news is the most important story of the moment. It is also sometimes referred to as “news flash” or “special report.” It describes a story that has received widespread attention and is relevant to a large audience. However, it usually only applies to live events, and the news organization has already reported on it. The term “breaking news” is also used in place of “just in.”
A break in coverage may require the network to cut away to another programming, or the station may continue its live coverage. In other situations, a reporter may be on site at the event. In either case, a reporter will begin sharing more details as they become available. For example, the ABC breaking news ending might include the words “breaking news” and “special report” together. While a network might continue to show a live shot of the anchor as it covers the event, the local station may cut away to show more video.
Breaking news may also interrupt prime-time programming. During prime-time, breaking news is an especially disruptive time. Breaking events interrupt programs and new programming, as well as highly-rated shows that still have time to air. The April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted an episode of ABC’s Scandal. Broadcasts may be forced to suspend regular commercial advertising during these breaks. Nevertheless, these interruptions can be useful to viewers in many situations.
