About Trending
During breaking news, non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, regular commercial advertising) is interrupted for live coverage of an event. The network will usually provide a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to join the feed. In the past, such cuts-ins were limited to extremely urgent events that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous networks to interrupt their programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. When a break-in occurs, the network may also display a special graphic, and station identification may be overlaid or otherwise altered to convey urgency. This type of reporting is commonly seen on 24-hour news channels.
