Trending is the term used to describe a news event that is popular on social media, as indicated by a rise in searches on various search engines. This trend is sometimes followed by a corresponding increase in traffic on the website of the source being discussed. The resulting increase in readership is often reflected on the front page of the website or in the latest issue of a newspaper, magazine or podcast. Trending may also be used to refer to a story being covered by a news network, particularly when the story warrants an interruption of regular programming. This type of interruption is called a “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” Previously, these breaks were reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and were usually marked by a special graphic or countdown sequence.
