Breaking news (also called a newsflash, newsbreak or special report) is an urgent news report that interrupts normal, non-news programming and sometimes regular network newscasts for immediate coverage of significant, highly relevant events. The news event may be local, regional or national in scope, and requires the stations to suspend commercial advertising for sustained coverage. The news break typically begins with a newsflash graphic and music cue, followed by a countdown sequence to allow the station to switch to the network feed. This type of interruption is typically reserved for extremely important, and sometimes historic news events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which required nationwide, live coverage and interrupted several networks.
