Breaking news is a term used to describe a news event that is so important that it requires immediate, nationwide coverage and necessitates the interruption of regular programming (typically non-news programs). Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were reserved for highly urgent news events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and were often signaled by an alert crawl overlaid on the lower thirds of participating television stations. Depending on the severity of the news event, broadcasters may use a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report” graphic as an indication of the breaking story.
