Breaking news is a television, radio or online media report that covers an event which has a high level of public interest and requires immediate coverage. This type of report is usually interrupted from other non-news programming, but can also occur during regularly scheduled network newscasts (often with a special countdown sequence to give affiliate stations time to switch to the national feed). The term is most commonly associated with the broadcast of urgent news events such as terrorist attacks or natural disasters, which elicit nationwide coverage and require numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming for extended live reports.
