Breaking News is a type of television or radio news report that covers a story that demands immediate, exclusive coverage. These reports are usually interrupted from regular programming or, in the case of 24-hour news networks, may be overlaid on the bottom of a screen. Depending on the severity of the event, a network may alert affiliates to prepare for a breaking news break and use an opening graphic with distinctive music cues to signify that the feed is about to begin. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was generally reserved for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt regular programming.
