LIVE: Andrea Mitchell Interviews CIA Director William Burns | NBC News
Breaking news stories can interrupt prime-time programming and new episodes of highly rated shows. In addition, breaking news can take place on days that would normally be dedicated to another type of programming. An example of such an interruption was the Shayrat missile strike on April 24, 2017, which interrupted an episode of ABC’s Scandal. The news media can use special topical graphics to help viewers stay current on the story. Using these techniques, local television stations can ensure that viewers do not miss any of the latest breaking news stories.
Breaking news is also a term used to describe various kinds of news. It has replaced the older term news bulletin in local news stations, where it implies exclusivity of coverage. However, not all viewers view these stories as breaking news. As a result, the terms “breaking news” are not always used consistently. For example, “breaking news” often refers to breaking news stories from August 2017 or the North Korea crisis of 2017-18.
Breaking news stories are often interrupted by anchors who remind viewers of other local and national coverage. After the break, a network may continue to air the story, or a local TV station may switch to a live shot of the anchor. In some cases, a live shot of a breaking news story will continue to run while a local reporter joins the story. In addition, the transition from analog to digital television has expanded viewing options. Daytime and late-night broadcasts are generally moved to an auxiliary digital subchannel that airs alongside the main signal.
