Current News (also known as breaking news or late-breaking news) is a term used by broadcasters to identify an issue that warrants interrupting scheduled programming in order to report its details. This can be a major or minor news event.
In the United States, this term is also used to refer to special reports on television. Oftentimes, these reports will be pre-empted by other programs if they have segments that are not aired or are too long to be completed in their time slot without being interrupted.
The format of a breaking news report on network television commonly consists of an opening graphic, music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”), and an anchor who welcomes the viewer to the broadcast and introduces the story at hand. Lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
On radio, the process is somewhat similar but different considerations are made depending on the medium. For example, local stations are very careful about what stories they relay during play-by-play broadcasts of professional and college sports; they often limit the use of a breaking news theme to those that are the most urgent or dire and are used only for true breaking news coverage.
In contrast, when a major news event warrants an interruption of a national network’s regularly scheduled programming, the broadcaster will alert all affiliated stations via an internal alert/message service, or the station’s master control, and allow them to join in the feed. During the initial cut-in, the news anchor will typically mention that more information will be available on the station’s later local newscast and/or the network’s overnight news program, if applicable.
