NBC News NOW – July 18

In the media, current news can mean a lot of different things. Breaking news is a term commonly used to describe news that is currently happening, but was previously published elsewhere. Other terms for breaking news include late-breaking news, special report, and “news flash.” The term is generally used when a story is happening right now, or is of wide interest to viewers. Although “breaking news” often refers to a story that is happening right now, it is also used to describe news that has happened in the past few days.

During prime time, breaking news is often interrupted by new programming or highly rated shows. Some newscasts may even have only a few minutes left to air when a major event breaks. But if there is something of interest going on, viewers can always return to catch up on the latest news. A recent example of a television network breaking news during prime time is when the Shayrat missile strike interrupted ABC’s Scandal episode.
