If a breaking news event occurs that requires the interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of national network newscasts, an interrupted feed from the network) or a temporary pause in an ongoing news story, a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” will typically be aired on TV and radio stations. Depending on the seriousness of the event, these reports may last for only a few minutes or continue for hours and even days as new developments occur.
In the past, these breaks were often limited to events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. More recently, 24-hour news channels have sprung up, allowing their anchors to interrupt programming with a live cut-in at the drop of a hat.
