When breaking news happens, the event requiring the interruption of non-news programming (or, for network affiliates, regular, scheduled network newscasts) is often announced through a graphic overlay and a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. The resulting special report may last only minutes, or it may continue for hours or even days, depending on the urgency of the news item. Breaking news can also refer to a specific segment of a larger, ongoing news story, such as the breaking of a presidential assassination plot. In addition to special reports, the term can also be used for news tickers that run throughout regularly scheduled television or radio programming. Previously, such breaks were usually reserved for national events that required immediate coverage.
