Cable news has been on the air for decades. Historically, it has been a profitable business. However, broadcasters have benefited from one-upmanship with live events.
But streaming is set to shake up the political landscape. Online video will no longer be governed by expensive negotiations with cable companies. This may lead to new overtly political news operations.
Streaming is also a more timely and cost-effective means of delivering news. Newscasts are delivered as demand warrants. And, with DVRs, time-shifting is possible.
Traditionally, viewers had to match the clocks of the programmers to get the news they wanted. Today, though, streaming allows a viewer to customize their experience.
Major news networks have been pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into streaming operations. ABC, CBS, and Fox have already launched streaming services. They are hoping to make it as big as cable.
As streaming becomes more popular, cable could face the same kind of siloing problem it has always faced. The same commercial-averse viewers may choose to stop paying for TV news.
Streaming will also give local stations the opportunity to break away from the network feed. For instance, a local station may begin its evening newscast on its own. Alternatively, the local station might join the national network’s feed on “extended editions.”
A breaking news report is a live event or story. It can last a few minutes or days. In general, a breaking news story is the most important story of the moment.
