Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio broadcast that interrupts regular non-news programming and/or a live network feed to provide coverage of an event in progress. A breaking news segment is typically accompanied by a distinct music cue, a distinctive opening graphic and an alert to viewers, including network affiliates, that the break is occurring. In the days before 24-hour news channels, breaking news segments were rare and usually limited to events of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which triggered nationwide coverage and required multiple stations to suspend their regular programming.
