Breaking news is an urgent event that requires a broadcaster to interrupt non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts. The event must be sufficiently important to justify the interruption, and usually triggers a countdown sequence in which affiliate stations are told to stand-by as they switch to the network feed. The network may then introduce a graphics package and distinctive music cue, with lower thirds or other graphics altered to convey urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, breaking stories were often covered through cut-ins or alert crawls during non-news programming, but such interruptions have since become less common.
