In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is an event that elicits immediate coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Breaking news stories are usually accompanied by a distinctive opening graphic and music cue, and a countdown to the network feed from which affiliated stations may switch their current commercial programming for the breaking story. In the past, breaking news was typically interrupted through “newsflash” or “special report” segments during regularly scheduled programs and on newscasts.
