Breaking news is live television coverage of a current event that requires the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in rare cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). When such an event occurs, a national network will alert its affiliated stations to expect a cut-in; the network will then display a countdown sequence and pause its feed, allowing affiliates to switch over to the breaking news report. The break-in often features a special opening graphic and distinctive music cue, and may last for as long as several hours or days. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news channels, break-ins were typically reserved for events deemed to be of severe urgency or public interest, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
