Trending is a news story that has been popular on social media or in pop culture. The story is typically followed by a hashtag and has received widespread attention from both the general public as well as the news media. The term is also used to describe a current event that has recently become relevant again after an extended period of time, such as a celebrity scandal or a political issue.
Breaking news is a television or radio segment that interrupts regular non-news programming to cover an urgent and important topic. This may include severe weather events that require immediate coverage (e.g., tornadoes or hurricanes).
Before the existence of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions for breaking news were reserved for major events that required nationwide coverage and an immediate response. In such cases, the network would typically alert affiliates to stand by and pause their feed. Then the anchors would begin covering the story with a special graphic overlayed over the normal station logo or lower thirds of the show.
