Breaking news is a news item that is of such importance that it warrants an interruption of current programming. Such events are generally followed by a full-length report or special report on the newscast, which can be live or taped and may be presented from studios or remotely via satellite, video conference, or over the Internet. Before 24-hour news networks were common, such interruptions were usually reserved for extremely urgent news items, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage and forced numerous television and radio stations to interrupt regular programming. Today, breaking news events often result in a special ticker that is overlaid on top of existing lower thirds and graphics.
