Breaking news is also known as late-breaking news, special report, and special coverage. It describes the most important story of the moment and is sometimes live or happening at the time of the broadcast. It may be used for a story of great public interest, such as a natural disaster. However, it is not always a useful term, and it is often used after a news organization has already reported on a story. Alternatively, the term “Just In” is sometimes used.
Current News coverage varies by time zone. For example, NBC’s breaking news coverage featured the low-rated The Blacklist during the Eastern and Central time zones. Syndicated and network programs may be interrupted or canceled due to breaking news. Similarly, shows with more than twenty or forty-five minutes may be rescheduled.
Local stations may be given the opportunity to break away from the network feed and begin evening newscasts. This is done by giving an anchor cue. They will pause the broadcast for a few seconds and then resume coverage. The anchor will then remind viewers to watch local news for more information. In some cases, the broadcaster will also switch to a video feed of the breaking news story.
