In news broadcasting, breaking news is coverage of an ongoing event that warrants immediate and extensive coverage over a national network or local television and radio stations. Often, breaking news will interrupt regularly scheduled non-news programming or, before the advent of 24-hour news networks, require local station affiliates to pause their current program and “cut in” to the network feed. The network will usually use a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed, and may alter lower third graphics or use a special graphic open to indicate that a break is occurring. This is sometimes referred to as a Newsflash, or a Special Report.
